The 9th Floor

The ninth floor, accessed via an old stairwell, is probably the most interesting and intact part of the Eatons building. The lobby pictured here has been left pretty much as-is since the building was closed, renovated, and re-opened. Upon entering, you feel almost like you've gone back in time. The walls, the windows, the old furniture, the mirrors on the walls, the vases on the stands... one can almost picture this lobby swarming with well-dressed business people waiting for a lunch table.

The 9th floor is host not only to the lobby however, but to a series of smaller rooms. Old filing rooms, phone booths built into the walls with real doors, bathrooms (with signage and dispensers from the restaurant's glory days)... all with great views of Montreal's downtown and main shopping street, Ste. Catherine.

While wandering trying to find an unlocked entrance to the restaurant, we got doubly lucky and found an array of new offices in construction. The Eatons building was turning out to have every kind of exploratory delight. Grinning, we pressed on and found, among other things, a hidden atrium the offices look down upon, more old signs, windows and doors stacked up, machine and utility rooms, and more stairs then you can shake a stick at.

The 9th floor turned out to be one of our favourite spots. A great risk/thrill ratio, tons of stuff to look at, and that was only the beginning...
